Why a dramatic performance to introduce the topic of domestic violence?

Love and Violence engages the audience on an emotional and intellectual level. The cast of one allows the play to be very personal.

Why Love and Violence and not a documentary?

It’s a one-woman show, so it’s not as violent/disturbing as a reenactment.

The show is based on truth. The audience can see both the passion and pain up-close.

What audiences?

Teens/Young Adults – studies have show that disturbing amounts of teens are in or have been in abusive relationships. Their teen pop idols are involved in domestic violence scandals and are they hearing helpful information or just gossip?

Males – a recent study on teen boys showed that teen boys that had conversations about violence in relationships were much less likely to be abusers later in life. Males can hold other males accountable. Men must know that it’s not ok to call a friend’s abuse “his business”, and be silent. Also, males are victims of domestic violence.

Women – many women (1 in 4) have been or are in a violent relationship. They need support and help. The Q&As at the end of each performance provide them a chance to talk to someone who has dedicated their life to helping them. Also, the 3 or 4 who have never been in an abusive relationship often do not know how to help a woman in that situation because she can’t imagine the complexities of what seems like a simple choice: leave or die.

Everyone mature teen or adult should engage in a discussion about domestic violence. Love and Violence is a good way to introduce this topic to many people.
